Z Table (Standard Normal Distribution)

A z table (standard normal table) lists the cumulative probability P(Z ≤ z) for the standard normal distribution, the bell curve with mean 0 and standard deviation 1. Enter a z-score or a probability below to look up the matching value instantly.

Standard normal curve with the selected area shaded

P(Z ≤ 1.96) =

0.9750

Every value is computed live from the standard normal distribution function — click any cell in the tables below to copy it.

Z table standard normal distribution: P(Z <= 1.96) = 0.9750

How to read a z table

Split the z-score into two parts: the first decimal is the row, the second decimal is the column. The cell where they meet is P(Z ≤ z).

How to read a z table: row 1.9, column 0.06, result 0.9750
  1. z = 1.96 → row 1.9, column 0.06 → P(Z ≤ 1.96) = 0.9750. This is the value behind the common "95% confidence" cutoff.
  2. z = −1.28 → negative table, row −1.2, column 0.08 → P(Z ≤ −1.28) = 0.1003.
  3. P(−1 < Z < 1) → subtract the two cumulative values: Φ(1) − Φ(−1) = 0.6827, the share of a normal distribution within one standard deviation of the mean.

FAQ

What is the Gaussian distribution?

The Gaussian distribution — also called the normal distribution — is a continuous probability distribution shaped like a symmetric bell curve, defined by its mean (center) and standard deviation (spread). The standard normal distribution is the special case with mean 0 and standard deviation 1; every z-score table is a lookup of its cumulative probability. Many natural measurements (heights, test scores, measurement error) approximate a Gaussian distribution, which is why it underlies most introductory statistics.

Is 1.96 the z-score for 95%?

Yes, for a two-tailed 95% confidence interval. z = 1.96 leaves 2.5% in each tail (5% total outside ±1.96), matching the 95% figure reported throughout the NIST/SEMATECH e-Handbook of Statistical Methods. For a one-tailed 95% test, the critical value is 1.645 instead — see the common z-values table above.

What is the z distribution table?

The z distribution table (or z table) lists the cumulative probability P(Z ≤ z) of the standard normal distribution for z-scores typically between −3.49 and 3.49. Statisticians use it to convert a z-score into a probability (or percentile) without recalculating the normal distribution's integral by hand — the table above generates every value live in your browser.

Can I download a free PDF copy of the z-score table?

Yes — use the "Print / Save as PDF" button above the tool. It opens your browser's print dialog with a layout built for the full table; choose "Save as PDF" as the destination to download a copy.
